Half Time for the Pest Control Season

July 29, 2011

July is coming to an end and with it we reach the half way point in “the pest control season.” If the pest control company has a well rounded and diversified service offering, the winter can and should be as welcome as the summer. That takes some doing and for most, the pest control season, roughly from April till October is when the bulk of new business arrives.

Whether to work or not to work during inclement weather, that is the question for service companies as they send out their truck fleets to do business each day. There are schedules to keep and money to be made. There are new customers with all sorts of weather related issues.

Today is an unusually wet day in southern California, where we expect “May gray,” but not downpours as we have had the past 24 hours.

Crystal Bowersox has a new hit song out called “Farmer’s Daughter.” I let it play a few times this morning, allowing the words to sink in. Here it is for you. Feel free to play it back a few times, as I did. It’s well worth it.

As a former alcohol and drug abuse counselor, I saw many lives damaged and destroyed. While the themes of abuse were common, such as parental absenteeism, mental abuse, physical abuse, reversal of parent and child roles, sexual abuse and confusion, early death and abandonment, jail time, each one case had its’ own unique enactment and consequences. Naturally, many suffered erratic employment and poor job prospects.

Pest Control Companies – Upward Mobility?

Accomplishment comes in many forms. Extra pay is always good. You can’t argue with that… well, that is, if you think your increased pay met your expectation. For most pest control technicians, who need each and every dollar, this is critical.

Promotions are particularly nice. But where is it that you can move up to in a pest control company? Read the rest of this entry »

The King’s Speech, arguably the best film of the year, lays bare the inner fears of a man forced into a life that demanded a great deal more than he was initially prepared to handle, a life that he dreaded. Also revealed are childhood traumas from which royals are not exempt, traumas that carry mental scars that need to become unbound if they are to be healed and overcome.

August 22, 2010

At home, we love watching TV star, Judge Judy. I enjoy listening to the competing points of view. Invariably, the winner understands the rules, has all the details handy and the loser is verbally stuck with an “Um” while scrambling to cover up the lack of supporting evidence.

Does Judge Judy provide a lesson to be learned by the pest control professional?

What’s Wrong? Pest Control Company, Pest Technician, or Both

July 24, 2010

The following pest control application received on the web is typical of many I receive:

“I currently work for (recognized large pest control company name) since x/2010, i am a (floating) tech. I work with termites and pest control along with doing special services including bed bugs, bees, fleas, etc. I am intrested in working for a good company who pays good and that the managment cares about me as well as for the customers. I love this industry along with the people who come with it. But where I’mm at there is no room to move around, the managment has little respect for us. So it is time to get with a good company.”

What’s wrong here? Is this top name pest control company that bad. Possibly so. There are reasons for bad employee morale. If employees are bad mouthing the company because they feel disrespected, they probably are. Read the rest of this entry »
